Most jurisdictions require a permit for a retaining wall above a certain height (commonly around 3–4 feet, but it varies), and many require a stamped design from a licensed engineer above that height or where there's a surcharge (a driveway, slope, or structure above the wall). Don't state a specific height threshold on this page unless you've verified it for your area — look up your local building code and put the real number here. A wall that fails is a serious safety and liability problem, so be straight with customers about permits, drainage, base prep and engineering, and never quote a wall as "no permit needed" to win a job.
